Goodbye [Jul. 29th, 2004|01:42 pm]
I'm just letting you know that I won't be posting much here anymore. From now on, I'll be using this LJ mostly for communities. I might of course also post in it, but not nearly as much as before. To some of you, this message may not even come as a surprise, since I haven't posted much lately at all. It just seems fair to let you know, so that you won't suddenly start to wonder where I have disappeared to. If people come by this journal in other ways, it's also nice to tell them that I'm not really here, don't you think?

Tour de France [Jul. 5th, 2004|05:19 pm]
Norwegian Thor Hushovd is leading the Tour de France! He was second in today's race, and according to the guy who is talking on my radio right now, this is the first time a Norwegian is leading the Tour de France overall. That's so nice! Also because I have always liked Thor - he seems like a nice person in interviews and such, and he is from a town not too far from here, so it's cool that he does so well! Not that anyone expects him to keep this up for three weeks, though - when they get to the mountains, there won't be any more amazing results from him. But so far, this is just great! I hope he wins one of the races, too...and he can do that, since he was second today and third two days ago. That's nice, too, of course!

Cute quiz [Jul. 3rd, 2004|05:58 pm]
My inner child is ten years old today

My inner child is ten years old!

The adult world is pretty irrelevant to me. Whether
I'm off on my bicycle (or pony) exploring, lost
in a good book, or giggling with my best
friend, I live in a world apart, one full of
adventure and wonder and other stuff adults
don't understand.

Odd Nordstoga [Jun. 7th, 2004|06:30 pm]
[Current Music |Odd Nordstoga: "Mademoiselle"]

Have I already told you that Odd Nordstoga is the most amazing Norwegian singer ever? His latest album, "Luring", includes 12 songs - half of which are real gems to my ears at least. And what's more...he is having a concert here (or rather, outside of town) on June 30th. I might be going there, but I'm not sure yet. Either way, his music is beautiful!

Exam panic/results - og litt eksamensprat på norsk [Jun. 5th, 2004|04:28 pm]
My last exam this term is just two days away. To be honest, I wish it was either much further away or already finished. The exam is about Norwegian/Scandinavian literature from the 1890's, and I must admit that I don't feel like I know enough about that topic at all. In this subject, we had to read about 7 books, as well as some short stories and poems. I guess it will be okay to get something about the short stories or poems, because those will be provided if we have to write about them. But for obvious reasons, they can't provide us with full novels...

This is a list of the books we had to read, with a few comments from me. It's all in Norwegian.

De bøkene det liksom er meningen at vi skal ha lest, er disse:

Knut Hamsun: Pan
Knut Hamsun: Mysterier
Tryggve Andersen: Mot kveld
Arne Garborg: Trætte mænd
Arne Garborg: Haugtussa

End of Norwegian book-talk.

As for my other exams, the results are in already. I got a D in my other literature subject. Since I'm neither interested in nor good at literature subjects in general, I'm happy because I passed. (For those who are used to different systems, pass marks in Norwegian Uni now are from A to E. F is the only grade for a fail). I mean, I got my study points for that course, and I don't mind the grade that much.

My other exam was an oral exam in phonology and morphology. Since that is a language subject, I felt much more confident about that. Of course I was nervous (especially nervous that I would be asked to read and translate some text in Old Norse), but being nervous is natural, I guess. While I was waiting for my turn, I was talking to two of the girls who had already had their exam. They got B and C respectively. Since the Professor told us in the last lecture that "all of you can't have B's on your exam, so you have to study hard", it kind of seemed like his top mark was a B, and A's were more or less out of the question. I was telling myself before the exam to go for a B and hope for an A. But I must also admit that anything less than a B would have been a dissappointment for me, since the subject has been my best one this year.

Anyway, when it was my turn to have the exam, I was extremely nervous. For the first few minutes I even had trouble controlling my voice and putting the words in the right order. But luckily, that feeling of panic disappeared quite fast, as I realized that I could answer stuff without problems. For the rest of the 30 minutes the exam lasted, I felt that I answered confidently to everything, and I had a quite good feeling when I left.

A few minutes later, I was asked to come back in and get my grade. The Professors talked to me for little while before giving me my grade, and since I was kind of excited, it felt like they were talking forever. But I guess it was just a minute or two, really. In the end, they said something like this: Maybe you noticed that we tried to give you hard questions in the end? This was because we wanted to test you for weaknesses. However, you seem to have none in this subject, so we have to give you an A!

Needless to say, I am extremely happy about that!

Song lyrics: "Via Dolorosa" [May. 21st, 2004|10:26 am]
I just got my CD's for the Member Song Contest the other day. Last night I wanted to listen to them for the first time. Since I'm going to vote for these songs, it's probably a good idea to hear them a few times before voting. However, there are a few songs that stand out already, as well as one song which is really amazing. I'm going to post the lyrics here:

Via Dolorosa
Performed by: Sandi Patti

Down the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem that day
The soldiers tried to clear the narrow street
But the crowd pressed in to see
The Man condemned to die on Calvary

He was bleeding from a beating, there were stripes upon His back
And He wore a crown of thorns upon His head
And He bore with every step
The scorn of those who cried out for His death

Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King,
But He chose to walk that road out of
His love for you and me.
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary.

The blood that would cleanse the souls of all men
Made its way to the heart of Jerusalem.

Down the Via Dolorosa called the way of suffering
Like a lamb came the Messiah, Christ the King
But He chose to walk that road out of His love for you and me
Down the Via Dolorosa, all the way to Calvary.

So - for the ESC fans who might read this: [May. 12th, 2004|06:29 pm]
Have a great semifinal evening!
...and may the best 10 songs go through to the final.

And...the best 10 songs are, in alphabetical order:

Andorra (They're lucky to be in this list, because it was either them or Israel out)
Belarus (My first favorite of the year, and still top 5-7 on my list)
Croatia (The best or second best of all the 36 songs - my other fave being Iceland)
Cyprus (A bit boring, but beautiful, too)
Latvia (...because I like rock music)
Macedonia (Didn't like it at first, like it much more now)
Malta (It may not be the best song ever, but it is cute!!
Monaco (I don't know why I like this...but I do)
Serbia & Montenegro (Beautiful! Top 5 on my list at least!)
Ukraine (Great mix of folk and modern music - wonder how it will sound live?)

Big Hero [May. 10th, 2004|01:30 pm]
[Current Mood | refreshed]
[Current Music |Si Heiman: "Gibor Gadol"]

Hej atah, Gibor gadol,
bo vehareh scheatah jakhol,
seh lo Chochmah lihioth chasak, rak baMilhamah.
Bo vehareh la kzath Chibah.

Unless you speak Hebrew, the above might look confusing for you. It looks confusing for me, too, but I found (parts of) the lyrics for Si Heiman's song "Gibor Gadol" on some German site. Since I have the song more or less stuck in my ears now, I just had to post the lyrics, too.

<3 Talya for finding the song for me!

How to avoid going to the dentist...and why it's not a good idea [May. 7th, 2004|01:52 pm]
[Current Mood | tired]
[Current Music |Ivan Mikulić: "Daješ mi krila"]

It's been too long since my last update already. Maybe that's why this entry is likely to be longer than my usual entries. I have a lot of things to talk about, so if you want to read all of it, I suggest that you go and get some coffee/tea/water/something else first :)

So, newest news first. I had a migraine last night, and still felt sick when the alarm clock woke me up this morning. In most cases, I turn off the alarm clock if I go to bed with a migraine, because I know that sleeping is the best thing to do. But this morning I had an appointment with the dentist at 08:45, so I wanted to try to get that done. But I had to call and cancel that, unfortunately. The stupid woman who answered the phone even told me that "you could have cancelled earlier". Hello? Does she even know what a migraine is? It's not like I know a week beforehand that I'm going to get one....Either way, she gave me a new appointment at June 2, so I have to wait almost a month to get this done. Blah.

But at least I feel okay now. I'm just a bit tired, but that's okay.

Also, I have handed in my stupid literature paper now. The deadline was today, but I handed it in two days ago already. I even bought some nice, colored sheets of paper for the front page. Hopefully it will look impressive :) Other than the extra-nice paper, I didn't do anything special to the front pages - I only have text on them. I saw a few people having front pages full of pictures and everything, but that looked kind of strange to me. Aren't front pages for Uni papers supposed to look professional rather than full of all kinds of unnecessary stuff :)

My postman is cool, and my "e-mailman" (if there is even such a thing ;)) is cool, too. In the "normal" post, I got a little package from HRT (Croatian TV). The package contained the CD-single of "Daješ mi krila" by Ivan Mikulić, so I'm happy about that! That song is wonderful! Also got a nice PM from Talya in my e-mail. She found Si Heiman's "Gibor Gadol" on MP3, and that's great news! They showed a small clip from that song on Norwegian TV some time ago, and I've been looking for it since then. Needless to say, I never found it - maybe because I didn't know the Hebrew title for it. So, about two days ago I asked Talya about it just for fun, and she has it already! I'm impressed! <3 Talya! She also has some Shlomo Artzi songs which she zipped to send me. I didn't get them last time because I had to leave, but I'll get them soon. That's good, of course :)

Also, my cousin might be coming here to stay for the weekend. If he does, I guess we willl have lots of time for Playstation games and such :) But of course, there will be less online time for me. But, that's okay - it will be nice to have him here, too!

Happy, but tired [Apr. 25th, 2004|03:30 pm]
[Current Music |Michael Ball: "One Step Out Of Time"]

First of all - I finished the stupid paper I've been talking about all the time recently! In fact, I finished it on friday, so this has been a good weekend. It was a relief to finally finish it, so I have spent most of the weekend in front of the computer, chatting on IRC and playing Hashira (which is a Tetris-type game that comes with Kyodai Mahjong 19.99).

I also fixed my quidditch bot, which has not been in use for months. I still have the question sets and such, but the bot script was not even loaded. But it works now. Last night there were about 7 bots in #huffquid, which is the most I have ever seen. But - none of them were in use, since it was right after the match.

Stupid paper #2 [Apr. 22nd, 2004|10:01 am]
[Current Mood | stressed]
[Current Music |Hellbillies: "Mikrobølgeliv"]

Yes, I know - you're probably sick of this topic already! But at least I finished one of the papers now, so I only have one left. It' supposed to be 6-8 pages long, and I have NO ideaa how I'm going to make it that long. For some reason I just can't write long papers...like, on the previous paper for old norse, I wrote about 4 pages (excluding the analysis part, which takes up much space and made it look like I had actually written a paper of more "normal" length). However, the Prof was happy with my work and such, so I don't know why I'm nervous about the length of my paper this time, too. But...I digress, because the paper I'm currently writing is for literature, since I handed in the one for Old Norse last week.

I want to invent an automatic paper writer, which writes good, long papers all by itself. Then I wouldn't have to worry so much about my own papers.

And yes - I know, this entry is messy and without "flow". Sorry!

Concultures and ImagiNations [Apr. 15th, 2004|09:59 am]
[Current Mood | thoughtful]
[Current Music |ABBA: "Fernando" (Spanish version)]

As you may (or may not?) know already, I've been working on a conlang (= constructed language) for a while now. When I had done the phonology and some basic grammar, I thought it would be much more fun if there were actually some people speaking this language. So...I just invented some :) In fact, I invented a whole country around that time, because I had the people already. It's just that until that point, I had been moving them around half the globe as a minority group in whatever country I was obsessing over at any given time.

I know, I must sound like some sort of geek with strange interests...

...However, I have recently discovered that I'm not the only person in the world who does this. There is this cool thing called ImagiNations, where people make up their own country, complete with flags, maps, political systems and so on. People make websites about their "countries", communicate through a mailing list and even have sports competitions between their countries. The only thing I don't like that much, is that it's all set on "alternate Earth"-type planets. However, I realize that it's more practical that way, since "real Earth" is already full of "real" countries!

For the past few days, I've been thinking about whether I should apply to join this or not. I think it would be a lot of fun, but I would also have to either re-work much of the information I have about my current country, or make a new one just for the purpose of ImagiNations. If I make a new one, I won't be able to spend so much time on my current one, and I don't want to change much about my current one either. After all, it's MINE, I invented it and came up with all the information I have, so it wouldn't be right to "re-locate" it to some "alternate Earth" or to adapt its history to fit in with game history.

So...if I join, it's most likely with some new country. But I'm still not sure if I want to do that, since I have become quite "attached" to the country I'm working on now. (As you might have noticed already, since I use the flag as my LJ icon).

Stupid papers [Apr. 14th, 2004|03:09 pm]
I finally finished writing the Old Norse paper. About time, too, since it's due tomorrow. Even though I had most of it done already, I had to check some grammatical stuff and such. But now it's done, so I'm quite happy about that. When (if?) I pass it, I'll be even more happy.

The stupid thing is that I still have that literature paper to write. I still have about two weeks to complete it, but I don't have any motivation to write it at all. My original plan was to start working on it today, but I ended up visiting some people instead. Either way, I'll have to get started on that paper quite soon, unless I want to write it in a hurry two days before it's due. Since it counts as our exam, I want to do well on it, and I won't do well if I have to write under (too much) pressure.

As for other things, my birthday is only two days away, and I got the first birthday card today! It was super-cute, with a kitten on it. That card made my day :) I also got an early present, because I got a small owl figurine from the people I visited. They just returned from their holiday in Germany, and since they already told me that they bought me an owl there, they just gave it to me while I was there. However, they insist that it's just a "holiday present" and not a "birthday present", because they apparently have something else for my birthday. Nice people, if they're giving me presents twice in three days :)

always room for improvement...

No motivation for anything [Mar. 23rd, 2004|03:46 pm]
[Current Mood | apathetic]

I really should be studying, but I don't have any motivation for that at all. In fact, I've had that problem for quite some time now, so the pile of study-related stuff I should be doing is getting bigger every minute. If you're interested, this is what I should be doing...hopefully some time quite soon:

  • Start working on the term paper for the literature subject known as "The Uncanny".
    • E-mail the Professor and inform him of my choice of subject (which, if you wonder, is Dreams in relation to "the uncanny" ).
    • Get the subject approved.
    • Do some research for the paper - some Freud, some articles and such.
    • Prepare an oral presentation of the subject.
    • Write the paper (as you can see, I have way too much to do before I even get this far!)
  • Various stuff for Old Norse:
    • Type notes from the lectures into the computer.
    • Make a separate document for things likely to come up at an oral exam.
    • Read the next page of the Old Norse-text we are working on.

I guess that's all. It may not look like it is a lot, but I promise - it is a lot if you don't feel like doing any of it! And if all this wasn't enough, I expect that we're getting a paper to write in Old Norse next week. If it's like the phonology paper, we get 2-3 weeks to finish it, but one of those weeks will be the Easter break. I'm not planning to study during Easter, so I suppose I have to sit down and write that stupid paper quite soon after we get it.

Also, my phonology/Old Norse-Professor didn't copy from my paper for the reference materials he made us. I must admit that I felt kind of sad at that, because he told me he would copy from my paper for that. If he wasn't going to do it, why did he have to say all those things he said about my paper in the first place? Such behaviour confuses me...

My map of Europe [Mar. 22nd, 2004|05:06 pm]
Since I have never been outside Europe, I was kind of annoyed at the "World Map" thing that I posted here before. When all the countries in the world were included, it looked like I had hardly visited any countries at all. But...let's take a look at which European countries I've been to instead - it's much more interesting :)

Pick an interest from my profile that either:

1) you know nothing about but sounds intriguing,
or
2) you know something about but can't understand my interest in said ... interest.
